Spencer Volmar has been an amateur runner for many years, squeezing in workouts before and after his demanding workday in the electrical engineering industry. In the middle of 2011, he decided to take his running career a bit more seriously by signing up for a half marathon.
"It's easy to head out and run at a leisurely pace from time to time and completely stop pushing yourself," says Spencer Volmar. "In fact, that's exactly what I was doing. I was just putting one foot in front of the other, day after day, and not seeing any real improvement in my athletic performance. I thought that participating in a marathon would help motivate me to get to the next level."
So Spencer Volmar signed up to run the Moab Half Marathon. This course snakes through some of the most beautiful scenery in Utah, winding alongside the Colorado River beside a beautiful red rock canyon, and then entering at Swanny City Park.
"I wanted to run in a marathon that provided a lot of visual interest," says Spencer Volmar. "I'm a visual person myself, and I thought that having access to such beautiful scenes would help encourage me to move forward and really enjoy my run."
By all accounts, the weather was beautiful for a run on that October day, with bright sun to motivate the runners and the cool air of impending autumn. Spencer Volmar had no problem staying motivated during his run, and he completed the race in the 975th position overall. He was 103rd in his class, and 609th in his gender.
"This was a decent showing, especially since I had very little marathon experience prior," says Spencer Volmar. "It was also just a lot of fun. I am planning on doing a lot more of these sorts of races in the future. I totally improved my athleticism through the training, and I had a great time on race day. What an experience!"
